 “They are an abomination; a blemish to nature,” the witch detested, and followed up with a spat to the ground. The Chief Inspector agreed to both points, but it didn’t bring him any closer to discerning why the King had sent him on this journey, nor, for that matter, why the powerful witch Gretchen had reached out to him. “I want you to fix this, John, before the next war begins. Or else,” she threatened. The Chief Inspector didn’t need that part to be explained; no one had trifled with Gretchen and lived to tell.

A week ago the Chief Inspector had been living a rather mundane existence in the Adair Kingdom, working under his longtime friend, Sheriff Orem Fisher. But an early morning rendezvous at the castle had put him at the front of an investigation with a mismatched cadre of individuals to verify if a hamlet of fisherman had indeed perished at the hands of the Old Goblin Nation. A nation that had gone dark nearly 100 years ago. Now he was pitted between the King’s mission and the witch’s bidding, while armed with a handful of spurious clues to investigate what actually happened.
