Viking Kids Don't Cry

For Didda and her sisters, life in the remote fjords of Iceland in 1935 was one of danger, hard work and joy. Like their Viking ancestors, their life is full of trolls and Hidden People and the daily chores around the farm. Didda loves climbing the cliffs to collect bird's eggs but would rather face a troll than Grandpa's nasty-tempered cow named Old Red. But, when the chores were done, the adventure begins. She and her friends ride Icelandic horses across the fjord, risk the wrath of the trolls attempting to fly from the cowshed room and come face-to-face with a trapped polar bear. The Icelandic frontier real-life hardships she faces teaches her to value every day.

Grandpa always said Viking children never cried; they howled, screamed, bellowed - but did not cry! Didda learns to overcome her fear of a terrible storm at sea that threatens to sink their ship and must come to terms with the loss of a close friend. She comes to understand joy, fear, loss and life while never crying even once.

This enchanting story of a strong-willed young girl viewing life as a great adventure while facing the realities of fear and death was inspired by the author's own childhood experience.

An Enlightening Quiche

by Eva Pasco

Two headstrong women in their forties coming from different moral directions clash within the confines of a French-Canadian mill town in northern Rhode Island's Blackstone Valley. Their narratives relate how an heirloom quiche recipe and baking rivalry redress misconceptions, misdeeds, and maliciousness which wreak havoc on those caught in the crossfire of a tragedy precipitated by reckless conduct.

Augusta Bergeron: Dysfunctional.  Deceptive.  Demure.  More than meets the eye at face value and stuck in a holding pattern, the town siren engages in morally destructive behavior she attributes to maternal abandonment until she eggs-humes her mother's quiche recipe.

Lindsay Metcalfe: Pedigreed.  Privileged.  Proper. Mourning the recent death of her mother, the historian-in-residence hailing from Boston sets out to preserve the legacy of an impoverished mill, but gets more than she bargains for all around.

Jorie and the Magic Stones

When Marjorie went to live with her frosty maiden aunt, she couldn’t imagine the adventures she would have with dragons — good and bad — and all the strange creatures that live in a mysterious land beneath the Tarn. The spunky 9-year-old redhead forges an unlikely friendship with an insecure young boy named Rufus who lives with his crusty grandfather next door. When Jorie — for that is what she prefers to be called — finds a dusty ancient book about dragons, she learns four strange words that will send the two of them into a mysterious land beneath the Tarn, riddled with enchantment and danger. Hungry for adventure, the children take the plunge, quite literally, and find themselves in the magic land of Cabrynthius.

Upon meeting the good dragon, the Great Grootmonya, Jorie and Rufus are given a quest to find the three Stones of Maalog — stones of enormous power — and return them to their rightful place in Cabrynthius. Their mission is neither easy nor safe, and is peppered with perils in the form of the evil black half-dragon who rules the shadowy side of the land. They have to deal with a wicked and greedy professor, the tragic daughter of the bad dragon, caves of fire, rocky mountainous climbs, and a deadly poisonous butterfly.

Jorie must rely on her wits and courage to win the day? Can she do this? Can she find all three Stones? Can she save Rufus when disaster befalls him? Can she emerge victorious? She and Rufus have some hair-raising challenges, in which they learn valuable lessons about loyalty, bravery, and friendship.

The Everett File: The Gooey Gospel of Truthy Goodness

The Everett File:

The Gooey Gospel of Truthy Goodness

The Everett File: (The Gooey Gospel of Truthy Goodness) is a contemporary satirical novel of biblical proportions—and distortions. Two lifelong friends, a former seminary student and his eccentric homeless cohort must decipher the cryptic message of a dying man’s last words before serious harm comes to a revered international figure. On their surreal adventure, they unearth centuries old mystical secrets, have conversations with a dashboard Jesus, dodge the FBI, uncover the mystery of what really happened to Marilyn Monroe and possibly begin the unraveling of established religion as we know it. Irreverent and often hilarious, The Everett File carries on in the quirky tradition of works by Kurt Vonnegut and Christopher Moore. Other Amazon books by Steven A. Moore include Rainbow Bud: A Rock 'n Roll Tale.

Splintered Reflections

Shattered with the disturbing loss of both parents, Cathy struggles with her identity asking every morning as she looks in the mirror Who Am I? Riddled with guilt and plagued by the issues left unresolved with her mother’s disappearance, she reluctantly pushes outside the box she has created for herself. Rescued from her isolation by a new friend named Jane, Cathy begins to break free of her shell through Jane’s insistence that the world’s adventures are to be embraced. Further, challenged by a demanding, creative writing Professor, Cathy discovers the cathartic effects of writing as she learns to pour her thoughts and feelings onto paper. A wistful first love brings a touching element to remind us that there is a Cathy inside all of us.

As if emerging from a fog, Cathy’s recovered memories enable her to look within and begin to piece together the shards of her shattered life. Through her small network of friends and mentors, her self-doubt slips away as her confidence begins to grow, and she discovers that the answers she seeks lie within.

Many will identify with Cathy’s loss and loneliness, a condition which plagues most teenagers. While we feel her ennui, ultimately we are uplifted by the triumph of her spirit. With subtle grace, complicated wisdom, and striking emotion, Splintered Reflections reminds us of our human capacity for resilience, epiphany, and self-realization. This is a contemporary and relatable tale of personal growth, discovery, empowerment, and, finally, self-forgiveness that old and young alike will find compelling.

Nowhere Else I Want To BE

Carol D. Marsh founded, directed, and lived at Miriam’s House, a Washington, DC, residence for homeless women living with AIDS. In this powerful memoir, Marsh recalls how she came to confront issues far removed from her own experience: addiction, poverty, and the institutional racism that permeates our society on every level. From the humorous to the tragic, the mundane to the sublime, Marsh offers a gripping view into a world where the stakes are high and love is pushed to its limit.

Nowhere Else I Want to Be is the story of the inspiring women who transformed Marsh’s life. From Kimberly, who triumphs over a lifelong alcohol addiction, to Alyssa, who dies reaching out for the mother who abandoned her, Marsh witnesses the spectrum of human experience and the depth of the human spirit.
